Oktane21: How Box and Okta secure collaboration and workflows among distributed teams

Box and Okta

Work is fundamentally changing. Gone are the days where employees worked from an office from 9-5, and collaboration was limited to company employees. To succeed, businesses need to provide their workforce with a secure, and frictionless environment where they can collaborate with both internal and external stakeholders. That’s where Box and Okta come in. Together, Box and Okta are powering the modern-day workforce by enabling seamless and secure access to your organizations most critical content, from any device, from anywhere.

As part of our ongoing partnership with Okta, we were excited to participate in Okta’s second all-virtual Oktane conference to host a breakout session discussing how organizations can secure collaboration and workflows among distributed teams with Box and announce our deepened integration with Okta. In case you missed us at Oktane21, here’s a recap:

Our strengthened integration with Okta’s Risk Ecosystem API and Box Shield

Box Shield has a deep understanding of the users’ security posture within the Box app, while Okta provides additional perspective into how a user behaves across different apps in the enterprise ecosystem.  At Oktane21, we announced a deeper integration and increased synergies between Box and Okta where Box Shield leverages Okta to improve in-app behavior-based threat detection and Okta benefits from visibility into user activity.  For example, Okta and Box Shield will continuously share threat signals to strengthen risk posture during an employee’s session. Okta can then terminate any compromised sessions across all supported SaaS applications. This will help deepen our ability to protect our joint clients from any malicious or unsanctioned behavior.

Ensuring secure collaboration and seamless workflows among distributed teams

At the event, Lakshmi Hanspal, CISO at Box, hosted a breakout session and was joined by Tiffany Benton, Business Systems Manager at Bain Capital. The two discussed what is top of mind in during this time of continued uncertainty. They both agreed on how the COVID-19 pandemic brought us together as a community in ways that we never through would have been possible. One of the biggest challenges for CISOs and the wider IT org has been figuring out how to enable dynamic workings needs (i.e., fully remote or now possibly hybrid environments), while providing the same amount of trust and security that we had while in the office. As the number of devices grow, they chatted about the need to be flexible and upgrade security posture to reflect the increase in access.

Lakshmi and Tiffany went on to chat about how there is this shift to a cloud first end user environment requiring seamless integration and a flexible platform to push innovation and the boundaries of customization. They talked about how there is a huge opportunity for change right now. Tiffany explained that change management and culture are intrinsically linked so it is important to work with a technology partner that is like minded where you can partner through an iterative roadmap process to ensure long-term business continuity. One of the most important takeaways from the session was around device trust. Tiffany wrapped up the panel answering the question of what keeps her up at night, is the explosion of IOT devices. They both agreed that device trust becomes very important and the jury is still out on how we deal with this in a multi-layered approach to security, innovation and the boundaries of customization.
