Box's latest innovations on the Microsoft 365 platform

Microsoft 365 Integrations

At Box, we want to ensure that our customers have quick and easy access to their content, no matter which app they are working in. Tens of thousands of customers use Box and Microsoft together, so we have continued to invest heavily in broadening and deepening our integrations with Microsoft 365.

"The interoperability between the Box and Microsoft platforms are critical in helping businesses run securely and effectively," said Robert J Burkhart, Digital Workplace Experience Leader at Nationwide Insurance. "We use Box with Microsoft every day to accelerate employee productivity and collaboration so that we can serve our customers across any platform from anywhere."

Building on our existing partnership, we're excited to share several recent and upcoming Box integrations with Microsoft 365 that make it even easier for Box customers to access and collaborate on Box content across the Microsoft product portfolio.

Microsoft Teams

Microsoft Teams works to simplify and streamline meetings, communication, and collaboration for organizations of every size. Since we launched our Box for Microsoft Teams integration last March, we have continued to make enhancements so that users can streamline their workflow, while having the convenience and peace of mind that all of their content is in one secure platform.

Available today, we have rolled out Box notifications within Microsoft Teams so that joint users will get notified of important updates to their Box files from directly within Teams. This integration is especially crucial to enable seamless workplace productivity as teams around the world continue to work remotely. Later this spring, we will be further upgrading our Box for Microsoft Teams integration so that users can get a more robust, embedded Box experience within Teams. This new enhancement will deliver key Box functionality such as the ability to create, share, and open Box files to edit from Teams. This enables Box users to bring in content from productivity suites like Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, and Apple iWork as they can use their app of choice to get work done.

Box integration with Microsoft Information Protection (MIP)

Box is building an integration to import MIP classification labels and enforce classification-based, inline security controls using Box Shield. This will enable joint customers of Microsoft and Box to secure their content across the two platforms. This feature will be available in May 2021.

Box and Microsoft

Box as a Managed Location in Microsoft Intune

Microsoft and Box have enabled an expanded capability for Intune App Protection Policies that allows opening and saving copies of managed documents to Box storage only. This enables enterprises more control over the flow of content for an additional layer of security. This new feature is available today.

Box for Microsoft Office

We have also made numerous enhancements to our Box for Microsoft Office integration that are available today:

  • Box for Microsoft Office Online can now support increased Excel and PowerPoint file sizes of 50MB and 1GB respectively, enabling us to better support customers' critical business processes, as they can collaboratively edit files of all sizes in real-time.
  • To help government agencies and their partners meet their compliance obligations in the cloud, Box for Microsoft Office Online will allow customers with FedRAMP Moderate or DOD IL4 requirements to be routed to the corresponding Microsoft Office 365 U.S. Government Community (GCC) environment. This new enhancement will support a fully compliant experience when using Box for Microsoft Office Online by ensuring data is processed and stored only on certified platforms.

Microsoft Graph

Microsoft shared a preview of the Box Connector for Microsoft Graph at Microsoft Ignite last September, which will be generally available in the summer of 2021. With the Box Connector for Microsoft Graph, content in Box can be surfaced across the Microsoft ecosystem, including Office 365, Office Online search, and SharePoint. This makes it easier for Box users to discover, explore, and access content as they are working in various Microsoft apps, reducing friction for users that need to manage Box content across multiple platforms for a truly integrated experience.

We are excited to continue building and innovating off of Microsoft's platform for the benefit of our joint customers. Click here to learn more about our integrations with Microsoft or reach out to your Box account team for more information!
