Organizations are managing too many content tools: Legacy infrastructure like file servers, and numerous apps and technology platforms to manage content and share it with internal users and external parties. This content sprawl wreaks havoc on critical IT goals around user productivity and data security, plus it strains budgets with duplicative spend on similar tools.
It’s time to simplify.
To drive consolidation and help companies of all sizes make an impact on productivity and security goals, we are incredibly excited to announce the next generation of Box’s content migration solution: Box Shuttle, now part of the Box Admin Console. With Box Shuttle, organizations can migrate content out of the array of tools they manage, and onto a single Intelligent Content Management platform – without ever leaving Box.
Content migration projects are a critical step to reduce tech stack complexity, secure important IP and assets, and unite user experience and activities into one platform. Historically, content migration projects have been seen as a complex, costly, and primarily enterprise-oriented. Technology to migrate content out of silos and into unified systems of record have been expensive and complicated to operate. Not anymore. With Box Shuttle, content migration is a simple, accessible project, and organizations of all sizes can take full advantage of Intelligent Content Management – and all the features and capabilities it has to offer.

Petabyte-scale content migration from the Box Admin Console
Box admins can now access Box Shuttle right from the Box Admin Console. Connect to more than ten source tools – both cloud and on-premises – and migrate content, permissions, and version history to Box. Whether you need to migrate one file or a whole petabyte, Box Shuttle makes it simple – even if you’ve never run a migration project in the past. You can run your entire migration from Box:
- Analysis: Connect into more than 10 source tools and analyze existing data. Gather details like file size, type, ownership, permissions, and more to help you scope and plan your migration.
- Configuration: Configure individual migrations and manage settings like file exclusions, bandwidth, file version migration settings, and more, so you run the migration that your business needs.
- Location mapping: Select where content on the source should live in Box, at the owner and folder level, on a folder-by-folder basis. Automatically apply owner-specific user settings to moved content, ensuring your security requirements are automatically met.
- Permission management: Select whether to migrate permissions or just content. Map users on your source to users in Box, and have flexibility to expand or restrict permissions, or skip conflicts when more in-depth assessment is needed.
- Simulation: Validate configuration and mapping before transfer. Get details including expected transfer duration, identified bottlenecks, total folders and files. Plus, access file-by-file details and ensure your settings are delivering the migration you need – before you transfer.
- Transfer: Run your migration and transfer your source content to Box without any disruption to your workday. Migrated content is copied from the source, and doesn’t overwrite existing data.
- Reporting: Review robust post-migration reporting, including high level summary details, visualizations of data, and deep, file-by-file results to audit migration outcomes when needed. Easily export details or store them in Box for later analysis.
- Delta sync: Re-run completed jobs to migrate any new or updated data on the source to Box without duplication. Delta syncs do not overwrite edits to content already made in Box, meaning your organization can continue to work, wherever they like, while you finalize the migration project.

Making content migration simpler and more accessible than ever
With Box Shuttle in the Admin Console, organizations can take advantage of Intelligent Content Management more quickly and efficiently than ever. And as organizations uncover new content silos in the day-to-day, migration is accessible immediately.
“Ease of migration is increasingly a requirement for organizations to drive both ROI and tool adoption,” said Alan Pelz-Sharpe, industry analyst at Deep Analysis, with more than 25 years in the content & content migration space. “With this latest Box Shuttle release, Box shows its commitment to improving ease of access, and takes a significant step towards democratizing cloud migration for any organization, large or small.”
This ease of access and simplified user experience proved beneficial for Jay Walton, IT Manager at SunSpots Productions, a growing creative audio agency in North Carolina – and a participant in our recent Box Shuttle beta program. A voiceover recording business, SunSpots Productions was operating from a file server, which was hindering their growth and negatively impacting client experience. Jay knew that Box was the solution, but the company had years’ worth of audio files living on the owned file servers. He turned to Box Shuttle.
“I had a ton of archived audio files to migrate into Box,” Walton said. “Attempting to manually upload and solve errors was completely out of the question, and I wasn’t loving any of the other options I’d researched. I was so excited and relieved to find Box Shuttle. As a built-in solution, it was very intuitive and simple to use. We plan on using Box Shuttle to move an additional 7 years of archived audio off aging NAS drives and into the cloud.”
Throughout the Box Shuttle beta program, we saw organizations of all sizes driving critical transformation projects with Box Shuttle:
- A large organization with a failing file server urgently migrating content to Box without having to separately license tools, saving them from loss of critical archival data
- A regulated company consolidating two separate acquisitions (with separate source tools) into Box within just six weeks
- A global retail brand migrating end-to-end product development processes – from design to distribution – off of various sources into Box, including both active and archival data
- A real estate firm using Box Shuttle for user-requested, file-by-file migration of needed archival data with ease, before decommissioning and deleting unneeded data
Now, it’s your turn. To get started, simply log into the Box Admin Console. Box customers are entitled to terabytes of content migration with their Box business subscriptions.
