Box Zones helps organizations comply with data residency across the globe and has expanded our global footprint with three new Box Zones: Switzerland, Singapore, and Israel. These additional Zones are now generally available to Box customers on Enterprise Plus and Enterprise Advanced plans. Enterprises in these markets can now store and process their Box content in-region, without giving up the collaboration and productivity they rely on.
With the expanded offering, Box Zones now offers secure and scalable storage across 10 regions, helping customers keep regional storage costs under control. Box Zones customers get access to all 10 Zones for one price, included in our Enterprise Plus and Enterprise Advanced plans at no additional cost.

What’s coming soon
In-region compute of content for France and Canada: These regions already had in-region storage. Mid-September, we will release additional enhancements to include key data processing operations in-region as well; including uploads, downloads, encryption, file representations, and zipping, all processed inside the region.
(Note that malware scanning via Box Shield is available currently in four Box Zones: United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and Japan. All the other Zones will have this capability rolled out at a later date.)
Why storage alone isn’t enough
Data residency has historically been framed as a storage question: where does the file live? But, for regulated industries and global organizations, that framing misses half the picture. Storage is the foundation and your files live in your region; But, compute is what happens when someone actually uses those files.
When a user uploads a document, the processing of that upload happens in-region. When they download it, the decryption and serving of that file happens in-region. File previews and representations are generated in-region. Your content isn’t just sitting in the right place. It’s being worked on in the right place.
For organizations navigating data residency obligations, that distinction matters.
Getting started is straightforward
Box Zones is designed to be low effort for administrators and completely invisible to end users.
Every enterprise on Box Zones has a default Zone, set once, and every user is placed on it automatically. When individual users need to be on a different Zone, administrators have three options:
- Admin Console: Assign a Zone directly from a user’s profile; Box migrates their content in the background with no manual file moves
- Multizones SSO: Map your identity provider’s location attributes to Zones so users land on the right Zone at sign-in automatically
- Box Developer API: For teams driving provisioning from an HR system or IT automation platform
In every case, content migration is automatic. Users keep working while their files move. They don’t notice a thing.
What’s coming next
Looking ahead, Box has announced plans to bring in-region processing of content metadata later in 2026, with in-region storage and processing for Box AI, workflow, and search to follow in 2027.
