Box Doubles Down on Windows Phone and Windows 8

With more than half a million downloads and counting since launching Box for Windows 8, we’ve seen tremendous interest and adoption of our Windows apps across our business and enterprise customers. In just the past few months since launch, Aruba Networks and P&G have started using our Windows 8 app to drive greater productivity and collaboration wherever they work.

Building on our recent iOS and Android updates, we’re excited to drop even more mobile goodness today with new features on our Windows Phone and Windows 8 apps. Take a look at what we’ve been working on!

Preview documentswithout opening them

Ever since we introduced our file preview technology on Box for Android at the end of last year, we've been stunned at how much people love to use it – we average more than 100,000 previews per day through Box for Android alone. We saw a huge opportunity to bring this kind of experience to Windows users.

The real value of preview technology on a Windows Phone or Windows 8 device is in our unique ability to show previews of 75+ file types—we're the only app capable of this in today’s marketplace. We’re going far beyond the typical Word document or PowerPoint presentation. Ever wanted to see an AutoCAD file on a mobile device? Or an Adobe Illustrator file? With Box, it's all possible—no need to open other apps or spend time downloading the file.

Platform-specific goodness

In addition to working towards offering the same features on all our mobile apps, we also like to take advantage of platform-specific features when they’re available. This is where Windows Phone and Windows 8 really shine, allowing us to hook into all the unique features of the platform to create an app experience that feels at home on your device. Here are just some of the unique features we’re adding in these updates:

For Windows 8:

  • Built a navigation bar (swipe from top) for a quick way to get to your All Files home, Updates and more.
  • Improved the spacing and utility of the semantic zoom functionality.

For Windows Phone:

  • Added support for Office documents and PDFs to open directly in Microsoft Office.
  • Designed a new wide cycle tile; pin our Live Tile to your Start screen at the largest size, and you'll see your Box Updates feed rotate through it.

Finally, we also added the ability to see and edit file descriptions, as well as engage in discussions on a folder level, within our Box for Windows Phone app.

All of these new features and enhancements add up to a packed release across both Box for Windows Phone and Box for Windows 8. Version 1.5 of both apps are available now on your devices. And don’t forget, you can still get free 25GB Box accounts when you sign up from any HP or Dell Windows 8 device, and 50GB accounts from the HP Elitepad 900 and Elitebook Revolve—full details are on our support site.
