Exciting Things to Come

By , co-founder and CEO

Hello everyone! We are still working diligently on getting some lingering kinks worked out on the new site. It looks like the last frontier is our java drag and drop applet which has been acting up ever since our migration. So now for the good news. For the past few weeks we have been trying to figure out the best way to allow document editing on the site. Initially we were considering a browser plugin that would allow you to edit a file and then have it saved directly back into your account, but we decided that this would be burdensome when working remotely (not on your own computer) and when allowing others to collaborate on your documents. What is the perfect solution, you ask? We’ve decided to build a web-based document editor. We have created some mockups and are really excited about incorporating this into the site. Give us a couple more weeks (hopefully less) and you will have the ability to edit any recognized document in your account. Best of all, you will be able to privately share that document with someone and let them edit it as well. This is perfect for group projects, remote editing, and more.

The next exciting thing on the docket is coming out much sooner than doc editing. As many of you know, we have been working on a desktop synchronization application for the past few months. This software, initially released on the PC, will allow you to sync any folder from your computer to your Box account. This software is in its final stages of testing locally, and will be available hopefully by Thursday or Friday of this week. We will email an announcement out when the time comes. The Mac version should safely come out in late March or early April.

Don’t hold back your comments, criticisms, and questions. We’re here to help.

Well, before we even ask, you already have done it!

Was wainting for a little editor, even a simple one, for MyBox docs!

I just yesterday heard about your service adn I ahve to say I am mostly impressed. One odd bug (feature?) is that I am finding myself constantly having to login no matter how often I say to remember me.

Other than that, I certainly would (and are) recommending the site.

When can we expect these software solutions?

Any Chance of webdav support ? – That would allow direct editing from word right ?

  • Anthony Bossuyt

So far, I am really pleased with the service. I just had to call the toll free support line, and was pleased to get a real person on the phone within a minute. (My question was easily resolved.) Continued good luck and keep up the great work.

David, Webdav is coming in the second release of our desktop software. You are right that this will allow editing, BUT only from a computer that you have setup the mapped drive on. A web-based document editor will let you edit on the fly with nothing to install. This way you can be in the library, at work, or on a friend’s machine and not have to worry about installing software, etc.

Any chance of a Linux client for the sync app? Not only would it widen your userbase, but it would make a lot of geeks happy (one of your primary user groups, I’d warrant)… with the wonderful features you offer, I wouldn’t be surprised to see it common to hear “it’s on my box.net” being mentioned by many a geek out there. Consider it, they’re a potent use group when satisfied.

Would it be possable to add something like an iDisk feature, Or atleast somewhere other people can access your public files?

That would make me box.net the best site EVER!! Thanks for the free gigabyte of space!!

  • Aaron

Yes, that feature is included in the premium and pro accounts! You can take a look here:
